U Street before the riots.

In the 1960s U Street was a center of art and culture in Washington D.C.  It was a main source of African-american growth from the 1920s to the occurrence of the riots.  The neighborhood hosted a number of areas that compensated the demand for music and entertainment, including Howard Theatre and Lincoln Theatre created in 1926 and 1921 respectively.  However the development of the neighborhood was abruptly stunted by the incoming violence and its consequences.  Following the riots the entire area was filled with damaged and condemmed buildings; Businesses and wealthy residents fled, leading crime and poverty to take their place.
