Columbia Heights

Beginning in the 1940s, Columbia Heights became area populated heavily by middle class African-americans who had replaced the vacating white residents. Like H Street the riots caused significant damage to homes and businesses.  For nearly thirty years, a large portion of homes and buildings remained empty. The region began recovering in 1999 when he Columbia Heights metro station was opened nearby.
